Lesson 1: A Little Thank You Goes A Long Way
I don't know why so many people feel entitled, but we're not owed anything. I try to show my appreciation to everybody that I pass in life, even if it is for something as small as saying "bless you" or if somebody opens a lane for me on a busy ride home. It is so easy to say thank you and warm that person's heart. That person may be having a rotten day, and you can make them smile with little to no effort. Did you say thank you today?
Lesson 2: People Don't Change
Unless they have a life altering moment. Most likely, without you there. After years go by. This applies to your boyfriend, your toxic friend, and even you. I've tried to "help" people to "see things properly". I've heard promises that people will change, and I think they will because they love me so much. I've made promises to change, because I love them so much. These changes can be made, but they don't last. They are temporary and/or cause bitterness. Find friends and loved ones that you love for who they are, that love you for who you are, and that don't feel the need to mould you into somebody that will work for them. Don't ever try to fool yourself into thinking that you can change who you are, you will never find inner peace being somebody else.
Lesson 3: Forgive Them Even If They're Not Sorry
Some people will never apologize, no matter how wrong they are. Don't let it make you feel less worthy, and don't ever get tired of "being the bigger person". Sure, it can be tiring. But there is no reason that you should catch their inability to cleanse their slate. I used to hang onto bitterness, every moment that passed that I didn't receive an apology, it would grow. Then I learned... to find peace, and forgive them. Who cares if they're not sorry because
Lesson 4: Thank God You're Not Like Them
My dad taught me this one. I remember it whenever somebody gets me really worked up. I just say to myself, "Thank God I'm not like them", and I am brought back to Earth. Not everybody can be as great as you :)
Lesson 5: Wash Off All Of Your Makeup
Use a toner just to make sure. Wash it off as soon as you get home, and let your skin breathe for as long as possible without all that... well... crap.
Lesson 6: Reading Is Good For The Soul
It doesn't have to be Eckhart Tolle, it doesn't matter what book you're reading. Get out of the habit of watching TV mindlessly... unless something really good is on... like Revenge, Shameless or Californication. Start reading before bed, and I promise you will feel enriched and more complete.
Lesson 7: Head Strong Can Take On Anyone
Write this lesson on a sticky note and put it on your mirror. Heck, I tattoo'ed it backwards in Latin on my back, so that when I looked in the mirror I could be reminded. A simple reminder can take you from feeling defeated to feeling empowered. Do not forget babes.
Lesson 8: Don't Think About It, Just Do It
If you sit there and hmm and haa over going to the gym or applying to new jobs, you're probably not going to do it. Say it out loud. "Don't think about it! Just do it!".. get up on your feet! And hit the ground running. Once you're doing it, you're already doing it. Stop thinking so damn much.
My little lessons get me through it. They bring me to good people and they bring good people to me. What are your life lessons?
